How To Create A Mediterranean Style Pool

Posted on

The Mediterranean encompasses a wide geographical area, so there are some differences in design style. However, since the Mediterranean is a sea, they all have water in common. Generally the Mediterranean style features bright colors with a shade of blue as part of the palette – that, of course, is in deference to the sea. Give your pool a touch of Mediterranean flair.

Pool Shape

There is no singular shape for the Mediterranean pool. However, Mediterranean pools generally feature a nod to geometry. This can come in classic arches characteristic of Greek architecture. However, you can also find it in pools with sharp edges. Even a straight rectangle can serve as the foundation of your Mediterranean retreat. You can also mix edges and arcs in a custom pool reminiscent of the quatrefoil pattern.

Swimming Pool Structure

A lot of elements go into making a swimming pool structure. You can choose between concrete, fiberglass or vinyl liners for the pool itself. As the Landscaping Network points out, concrete or gunite is the most expensive but most adaptable option. Vinyl is more budget-friendly but comes in pre-determined shapes. Fiberglass comes between the two in cost, but they also come pre-formed. Regardless of the main structure, choose a liner in a shade of blue that reminds you of the Mediterranean Sea.

You'll also have choices for the exterior structures of the pool. Tiling usually comes just above the waterline. If you're choosing a pre-formed liner, look for one that features tile work. Otherwise, consider which region of the Mediterranean you want represented in your pool, and choose tiles in that style. For instance, Tuscan colors are typically shades of yellow with clear blue, while the Moroccan palette features primary colors in ornate designs.

Pool Structures

If you don't have a Mediterranean style house, you'll want to convey that ambience with an external structure. Again, it depends on what region of the Mediterranean you're using as inspiration. However, white or beige adobe topped with curved terra cotta shingles is pretty typical. You can utilize this for a simple cabana or an elaborate pool house.

Another structure typical in Mediterranean pools is a water fountain. This can be a statue fountain or one designed to look like Mediterranean pottery. You can have the water trickling into the swimming pool or tucked into a corner with greenery.

Pool Landscaping

Speaking of greenery, landscaping around the pool helps create the Mediterranean vibe. In general, the landscaping should be more manicured than lush. For example, consider container gardens or raised planters around the pool rather than hidden planting beds. Palm trees are part of the seaside, but you could also plant cypress, olive or citrus trees for shade. Just don't plant these at the water's edge because they'll drop debris into the pool — they should provide more of a backdrop.

Install a slice of the Mediterranean in your backyard with a beautifully designed swimming pool.
