Tips For Designing A Tanning Ledge In Your New Pool

Posted on

A beautifully designed pool most often involves some type of water feature, but often these features are more about beauty than they are function. However, a tanning ledge is different. Not only does this feature add dimension to the pool's design, but they also serve as a useable space for the entire family. If you want to add this addition to your pool, here are some design tips to keep in mind.

Sizing

Think about how you want to use the area to determine how large of a sun shelf is necessary. For instance, if you want to install chairs in an area that you can relax in when you do not want to fully submerge yourself in the water, you need to ensure the ledge is large enough to accommodate the chairs, as well as extra room to safely navigate around them. This addition is completely custom so you can decide how little or how much space you want.

Depth

The only real depth guideline for tanning ledges is that they are shallow, often less than 6 inches in depth. However, you can decide what depth is right for you based on how you plan to use the space. For instance, someone who wants to use the space as a play area for their children might choose a depth that is shallower than someone who wants to install submergible ledge loungers.

Location

Typically, pool owners like to have their tanning ledge on the shallow side of the pool, but you can have some versatility in terms of exactly where to install it. For example, if you will have a spa installed with the pool, you might want to install the tanning ledge away from the spa. The tanning ledge is often a high-traffic area, so if you want to keep the spa space as relaxing as possible, you may not want these two structures side-by-side.

Built-in Features

Think about what type of features you want installed on the ledge. One common addition is a bubbler. A bubbler is reminiscent of a waterfall that adds an attractive element, while also ensuring the water around the ledge is constantly circulating. Another addition is an umbrella holder. These built-in holders are great for the days you want to hang out on the ledge but want to minimize your sun exposure.
